Governance

Future directions

The Department will strengthen community safety by:
  • leading a whole-of-government approach to the development of strategies that will ensure low risk offenders successfully complete their orders in the community.
  • reviewing the corrective services legislation to ensure that corrective services meets the expectations of contemporary society.
  • improving the delivery of intervention services to reduce recidivism rates.
  • collaborating with key government agencies to reduce the over-representation of Indigenous offenders in the criminal justice system.
  • reviewing the roles and functions of custodial facilities to enhance public value by maximising efficient use of resources.
  • continuing the development of the new Integrated Offender Management Strategy, which will significantly improve the ability to manage offenders in Queensland.
  • developing more effective strategies to address the special needs of vulnerable offenders, such as those with disabilities or mental health problems.
  • reviewing stategies for the prevention, detection and treatment of addictions, including illicit drug use, to improve public health outcomes.
Moving ahead on workplace safety

The Joint Review of Workplace Safety carried out by the Department and the Queensland Public Sector Union made 41 recommendations based on the concerns about safety in custodial facilities, which were raised by custodial staff and others who have significant interaction with prisoners.

Safety features to be introduced as a result of this consultation process include electronic hearing protection devices for use during firearms training and qualification shoots; an upgrade of duress alarms; upgrades to some master control rooms; the issuing of level two retention webbed duty belts and holsters, both with double locking mechanisms.
