Learning program for managers
Twenty-one of the Department’s middle and senior managers have concluded a University of Queensland Graduate Certificate in Social Science (Interprofessional Leadership) which focussed on collaborative practice and facilitation skills.

University of Queensland course co-ordinator, Penny Gordon, said the group had excelled in their studies, showing high levels of partnership and creativity.

Course participant, Jenny Briant, said members of the group had developed high levels of mutual respect, trust and interaction.

“All of which will help the organisation to achieve its goals,” Ms Briant said.

“It’s a case of the whole group’s achievements and potential being greater than the sum of its parts – the organisation can only benefit from the skills this group has acquired.”

Strategy: Implement a project management approach to minimise work-related injury/illness

The Department:
  • conducted program and project work which supported the safety and rehabilitation staff in delivering improved systems and outcomes to workplaces.

    Progress included:

    • a reduction in time lost due to approved workplace injury claims by 36.5%, down from 6781 days the previous year to 4305 days in 2003-04. This follows a reduction of 16% from 2001-02, demonstrating ongoing performance improvement by workplaces in injury prevention.
    • compensation claim costs remaining at the 2002-03 level.

Strategy: Implement a learning program to facilitate the agency’s change agenda in collaboration with higher education institutions

The Department:
  • worked with the University of Queensland to sponsor a group of senior and middle managers in a Graduate Certificate of Social Science (Interprofessional Leadership), which has added considerably to the capacity to manage change. This also resulted in the production of a change management workbook for senior managers.
