What career opportunities can QCS offer me?
With over 200 different job types and over 3000 employees, QCS is a diverse and dynamic agency of the Queensland government. There are a variety of career paths within QCS once you're part of our team.
Will QCS support me in further studies?
A study assistance program is available for permanent staff. The level of support depends on the relevance of the program to the current or future needs of QCS. In general you may be provided with financial support and/or leave to attend lectures and exams.
Does QCS offer flexible work arrangements?
There are many flexible options for Queensland government employees. There are options for part-time work, job-sharing and excellent benefits when it comes to parental leave and accrued time. The Queensland public service recognises that achieving a balance between work, family and life can contribute to happier and more effective workplaces.
Do I have to be an Australian citizen to apply?
To be appointed as a permanent officer, you must be:
- an Australian citizen; or
- a person who resides in Australia and has permission or a right to be granted
permission, under Commonwealth law, to remain in Australia indefinitely; or
- a New Zealand citizen who has a special category visa or a right to be granted
a special category visa under the Migration Act 1958 (Commonwealth).
Is it safe working in a Correctional Centre?
You'd be surprised how safe it is - security is our top priority. We have trained professional officers on hand 24/7 and your clients live in a controlled environment so you can focus on doing your job.
In which locations does QCS recruit?
There are various positions across the state of Queensland. Please see the attached Employment Locations PDF for all of our urban and rural locations.
Do you only have jobs in Prisons?
No. There are over 200 different job types in Queensland Corrective Services, many of them outside of a correctional centre. There are positions in Probation and Parole which manages offenders in the community. We also have specialist roles in offender interventions, intelligence and compliance functions.
What is the salary for a QCS employee?
Each position that is advertised will include details on salary. Please see the job advertisements on Queensland government website www.jobs.qld.gov.au.
Is there a probation period?
A probationary period applies to people who have not worked in the public service before. This probation period is not less than three months but for entry level custodial officers the probation period is 12 months. The probation period will be outlined in the Job Description when the position is advertised.
Why does Queensland Corrective Services conduct criminal history checks?
The Agency is committed to the upholding the highest standards of conduct, integrity and ethical behaviour and as such all potential employees must be seen to meet these same high levels demanded by the Agency. It is also a requirement of the Section 9a of the Criminal Law (Rehabilitation of Offenders) Act 1986 relating to the employment of Custodial Correctional Officers.
Who has to undertake a criminal history check?
All people commencing employment with the Agency must receive a satisfactory criminal history clearance.
What happens if I knowingly provide false information?
Applicants are advised that any false or misleading information knowingly given in their application, or omissions of information, may result in a withdrawal of any offer of employment, non-selection, termination of employment or criminal prosecution.
Why does the Agency conduct Psychometric Testing?
The Agency has developed a recruitment and selection tool that assists the selection panel in identifying those applicants who will most likely succeed as a Custodial Correctional Officer.

What is meant by mandatory qualifications?
Some positions require the incumbent to have a degree in a particular discipline in order to do the job. Where mandatory qualifications are indicated in the job description, you will need to make sure this information is included in your resume. Evidence of your qualification/s will need to be provided before appointment.
What if I have qualifications from overseas?
Queensland Corrective Services does not assess overseas qualifications. You need to obtain an assessment of comparability with Australian qualifications before applying.
