Queensland Corrective Services is investigating an attempt to smuggle drugs into the Maryborough Correctional Centre, Minister Neil Roberts said today.
Mr Roberts said a Corrective Services Officer found a tennis ball approximately two metres inside the perimeter fence yesterday .
"The tennis ball had been cut in half, packed with material believed to be cannabis and 35 tablets believed to be a prescription anti-depressant, and reglued together," Mr Roberts said.
"The ball was found during a routine patrol of the perimeter.
"This discovery demonstrates the multi-layered approach to security used in Queensland's correctional centres.
"The message is clear . If you attempt to smuggle contraband into a Queensland correctional centre you will be caught, prosecuted and face possible jail time."
Mr Roberts said prisoners caught with contraband items in their possession risked up to two years additional jail time.
"All matters are referred to the Queensland Police Services' Corrective Services Investigation Unit (CSIU) for investigation," he said.
