A picnic in the park For the fourth year, the Department participated in Picnic in the Park, one of the key events held during Queensland Week.

Corrective Services displayed a long-haul prisoner transport vehicle, examples of prison industries products and a wide range of information and photographs.

Members of the public enjoyed testing the IONScanner, which is used to detect drug traces on visitors to correctional centres.

Staff distributed thousands of the popular ‘drug free’ themed merchandise for children, including visors, rulers, bookmarks and postcards.

Strategy: Lead and contribute to the development of cross-agency arrangements and systems to achieve more effective and integrated government and non-government services

The Department:
  • collaborated with the Department of Justice and Attorney-General to create a partnership that will enhance operations in areas of interface between our respective staff, particularly in the courts environment.
  • collaborated with the Department of Health to commence the review of forensic mental health services.
  • worked with the Department of Emergency Services to enhance staff training to deal with emergency situations.
  • played an active role in the development of solutions within the Integrated Justice Information Strategy (IJIS) initiative which will improve the quality and timeliness of information used in making decisions about the management of offenders. Benefits from initial stages of IJIS will include access to bench charge sheets and court appearance information.

Strategy: Develop effective communication strategies to promote an understanding of the role of the Department in criminal and social justice

The Department:
  • participated in public events such as Brisbane’s RNA Show and Picnic in the Park to highlight and inform the public about its contribution to the Government’s community and child safety priorities.
  • amended documents and communication tools to promote the role played by the Department and individual units in the broader context of criminal and social justice.

Strategy: Develop strategic alliances with non-government agencies, stakeholders and the community, and other government agencies to improve the delivery of corrective services

The Department:
  • delivered the first corrections specific intelligence qualifications program [Advanced Diploma of Public Safety (Police Intelligence)] to intelligence officers from the Department and other states. The delivery of the qualification is a result of a partnership between the Department and the Queensland Police Service.
  • liaised with other agencies in the pursuit of intelligence gathering in order to enhance crime detection within the correctional system and to assist other agencies with their own investigations.
  • produced a poster about the Concerned Persons Register, which was distributed to all police stations, electoral offices of Members of Parliament, victim organisations, community corrections area offices and court houses.
  • liaised with Disability Services Queensland and the Disability Council of Queensland to investigate ways of improving our responsiveness to the needs of offenders with a disability.
