Queensland Corrective Services

Stakeholder Booklet

Message from the Minister

One of the key priorities for the Queensland Government is "protecting our children and enhancing community safety".

This is being achieved through targeted policies and legislation across the government.

The State Government and the wider community expect that the Queensland Corrective Services will continue to be a major contributor to meeting that priority. But to meet that expectation in the future the Department needed to change now.

This new business model is aimed at meeting the expectations of the State Government and wider community. It takes advantage of the Department's existing strengths - particularly the dedicated, motivated and professional staff - and builds upon those strengths to help achieve a positive outcome.

The new model also takes advantage of the Department's extensive physical assets - including arguably the most modern correctional facilities in the world, and new and upgraded Probation and Parole offices and supervisory equipment such as random urinalysis testing vans. Importantly, the new model also is based on the needs and expectations of staff at all levels as well as the broader community, including special interest groups representing victims as well as prisoners.

The review process resulted in many differing views on similar issues - encouragingly, it also resulted in the same views and solutions being provided in relation to other issues. I recognise, however, that not all views and concerns of staff or stakeholders may be fully reflected in this new model - but it does reflect the vast majority of views that were relevant to the operations of the Queensland Corrective Services.

The Business Model Implementation Team has started work delivering the new model which has been designed to ensure that the Department meets the needs and expectations of all internal and external stakeholders.

To all those who contributed, I thank you on behalf of the Queensland Government and I give you this commitment - the Department of Corrective Services and the State Government will continue to protect our children and enhance community safety.
